TMJ Treatment

Dentistry isn’t just about teeth. Problems with your jaw and bite can negatively impact your daily life. Do you suffer from a TMJ disorder? We can help! TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, and the acronym is typically used to describe dysfunction or disorders related to the joint (sometimes referred to as TMD). “Temporo” refers to the temple area of the skull; “mandibular” refers to the lower jaw; and “joint” is where the head and jaw meet. Problems in this joint may be caused by trauma, misalignment of the teeth, arthritis, or excess muscle tension. It can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. Some people develop TMJ from clenching and grinding in their sleep, while others never develop the disorder despite similar habits. Because the two bones that meet at the jaw are cushioned by cartilage and five different muscles, TMJ can cause a variety of symptoms, including: • Headaches • Earaches • Trouble or soreness in opening and closing the mouth • Clicking or popping of the jaw • Pain in the jaw muscles • Soreness in the area, sometimes extending to the face How Botox Can Help One of the innovative ways we treat TMJ disorders is with Botox therapy. Botox works by relaxing the overactive muscles that contribute to jaw tension, clenching, and grinding. By reducing the muscle activity that puts strain on the joint, Botox can significantly relieve pain, ease headaches, minimize jaw soreness, and even protect against further wear on the teeth. It’s a safe, non-surgical option that often provides quick and noticeable relief. What should I do? If you experience some popping without pain, these may be early signs of TMJ changes that don’t always require intervention. However, if you are experiencing pain or ongoing discomfort, an evaluation of the entire joint, surrounding muscles, and bite is recommended. There is no single solution that fits all cases, which is why we create a customized treatment plan just for you—whether that involves Botox therapy, bite adjustments, appliances, or other supportive care. Our skilled team has worked hard to know the ins and outs of TMJ disorders so we can better serve you. If left untreated, TMJ can worsen and, in extreme cases, require surgery to repair the damaged joint. Don’t wait until it reaches that point—talk to us about your concerns. Together, we’ll find the right solution to help you live comfortably and pain-free.

"I just recently started going to Dedicated Dental. Everyone that works there is so incredibly nice and the wait is never that long to be able to get in. I had to have an old filling drilled out and replaced along with another cavity. All my life of having cavities filled, etc.. It was the best experience I’ve ever had. My bite was right on from the get-go and I’ve never had a problem with it since. Thanks for being awesome!"
