Oral Health: Teeth Cleaning, Gum Care, Mouthwash, Flossing, Tongue Scraping

Oral health is an important part of our overall well-being, and it starts with proper teeth cleaning, gum care, mouthwash, flossing, and tongue scraping. While it may seem like a routine task, maintaining good oral health can prevent a multitude of dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and tooth loss. However, it is important to note that these practices should be done correctly and consistently, and a professional dentist can help guide patients on the best practices for their individual needs.

Teeth Cleaning:

Brushing your teeth twice a day is essential for maintaining oral health. It helps remove plaque and bacteria that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. When brushing, use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush, and make sure to brush for at least two minutes. Additionally, it is important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Gum Care:

Gum disease is a common problem that can lead to serious dental issues if left untreated. To keep your gums healthy, make sure to brush gently along the gum line and floss daily. Eating a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco products can also help keep your gums in good shape. Learn more.

Mouthwash:

Mouthwash can be a useful addition to your oral hygiene routine. It helps kill bacteria that can cause bad breath, and some types of mouthwash can also help prevent cavities. However, it is important to note that mouthwash should not be used as a substitute for brushing and flossing, and some types of mouthwash can actually irritate your mouth or cause staining.

Flossing:

Flossing is an essential part of oral health, as it helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth. Use about 18 inches of floss and wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about two inches of floss between your hands. Use a gentle back-and-forth motion to guide the floss between your teeth, making sure to curve it around the base of each tooth. Be careful not to snap the floss against your gums, as this can cause damage.

Tongue Scraping:

While not as commonly discussed as the other practices mentioned, tongue scraping can be beneficial for oral health. Bacteria and debris can build up on the surface of the tongue, leading to bad breath and other dental problems. Using a tongue scraper can help remove this buildup, leaving your mouth feeling fresher and cleaner. Simply place the scraper at the back of your tongue and gently pull forward, repeating several times until you have cleaned the entire surface.

While practicing good oral hygiene is important, it is also crucial to visit a professional dentist regularly. Dentists can provide deep cleaning and identify potential issues before they become more serious. They can also provide personalized recommendations for your oral health needs, as everyone’s teeth and gums are different. Skipping dental visits can lead to undetected dental problems that can cause pain and damage in the long run.

In conclusion, maintaining good oral hygiene requires consistent and proper practices such as teeth cleaning, gum care, mouthwash, flossing, and tongue scraping. While these practices can be done at home, it is important to also visit a professional dentist regularly to ensure proper care and treatment. By prioritizing oral health, individuals can prevent serious dental problems and enjoy a healthy and confident smile. Next article.

The staff is incredibly warm and welcoming. (The ladies at the front desk are absolutely wonderful!) The gal (I was so nervous I totally forgot her name) that helped during my procedures is honestly an angel! They squeezed me in late on a Friday afternoon, when most offices were already closed, for a dental emergency. They walked me through everything that would happen, provided options and did an amazing job fixing my tooth. It's obvious that Dr. K and her staff care about you, your dental health and your expierence at their office. I can not recommend them enough. Hands down best dentist office in Rapid City. Thank you guys soooo much!!! (I should add I have extreme dental anxiety, I'm talking cry like a baby all day, break my nails anxiety. They worked with me so well, were so patient and kind. If you hate the dentist, I bet Dr. Kennedy and staff will change your mind!)

I have been coming here for years and in my opinion this clinic has top rate doctors and staff. It is easy to schedule appointments. Their billing for services is clearly explained and their estimates for insurance and patient portions has been very accurate. The staff makes the patient care experience very relaxed, light hearted, and they all seem to enjoy a good sense of humor. Best of all my young kids love this place and actually enjoy coming in for cleanings and regular care. Kids loving the dentist should tell you everything you need to know!

This is my place of employment. I'm writing a review because I want our patients to know that our kindness and caring nature doesn't just stop after our patients leave out the door every day. The staff is one in a million, and we all thrive to care and help one another and support each other in and out of the office. Dr. Sewell and Dr. Kennedy are fantastic people, and doctors, clinically and personally. If you're looking to find an amazing dentist, that is still kind, caring and considerate look no further. We would be honored to have you as our patient!
