Periodontics: Gum Disease, Gingivitis, Periodontitis, Gum Surgery

Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum diseases. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the gums, ligaments, and bone that support teeth. Gum disease is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and if left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems.

Gum disease is caused by the build-up of plaque and tartar on teeth, which can lead to inflammation of the gums. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is a reversible condition that can be treated with professional cleaning, proper oral hygiene, and regular visits to the dentist.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more advanced stage of gum disease called periodontitis. In periodontitis, the bacteria in plaque and tartar begin to destroy the bone and tissue that support teeth, causing the gums to recede and the teeth to become loose. In severe cases, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss and other health problems.

Treatment for gum disease depends on the severity of the condition. In the early stages of gingivitis, a professional cleaning, improved oral hygiene, and regular visits to the dentist may be sufficient to reverse the condition. However, if gum disease has progressed to periodontitis, more advanced treatment may be necessary.

One of the most common treatments for periodontitis is gum surgery. Gum surgery is a procedure that is used to remove bacteria and diseased tissue from the gums, and to promote the growth of healthy tissue. There are several types of gum surgery, including flap surgery, bone grafting, and guided tissue regeneration. Learn more.

Flap surgery is a procedure in which the gums are lifted back to allow the dentist to remove bacteria and diseased tissue from the roots of the teeth. Once the bacteria and diseased tissue have been removed, the gums are sutured back into place.

Bone grafting is a procedure in which bone is taken from another part of the body or from a donor and used to replace the bone that has been destroyed by periodontitis. Bone grafting can help to restore the strength and stability of the teeth.

Guided tissue regeneration is a procedure in which a barrier membrane is placed between the gums and the teeth to prevent the growth of bacteria and to promote the growth of healthy tissue.

While gum surgery can be an effective treatment for gum disease, it is important to stress the importance of using a professional dentist rather than trying to do this themselves. Attempting to perform gum surgery at home can be dangerous and can lead to serious health problems. Only a professional dentist has the knowledge, training, and equipment necessary to perform gum surgery safely and effectively.

In addition to professional treatment, there are several steps that individuals can take to prevent gum disease. These include practicing good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing regularly, using an antiseptic mouthwash, and avoiding tobacco products. It is also important to visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.

In conclusion, gum disease is a common condition that can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two main stages of gum disease, and gum surgery is a common treatment for periodontitis. While gum surgery can be an effective treatment, it is important to stress the importance of using a professional dentist rather than attempting to perform gum surgery at home. By practicing good oral hygiene and visiting the dentist regularly, individuals can prevent gum disease and maintain good oral health. Next article.

The staff is incredibly warm and welcoming. (The ladies at the front desk are absolutely wonderful!) The gal (I was so nervous I totally forgot her name) that helped during my procedures is honestly an angel! They squeezed me in late on a Friday afternoon, when most offices were already closed, for a dental emergency. They walked me through everything that would happen, provided options and did an amazing job fixing my tooth. It's obvious that Dr. K and her staff care about you, your dental health and your expierence at their office. I can not recommend them enough. Hands down best dentist office in Rapid City. Thank you guys soooo much!!! (I should add I have extreme dental anxiety, I'm talking cry like a baby all day, break my nails anxiety. They worked with me so well, were so patient and kind. If you hate the dentist, I bet Dr. Kennedy and staff will change your mind!)

I have been coming here for years and in my opinion this clinic has top rate doctors and staff. It is easy to schedule appointments. Their billing for services is clearly explained and their estimates for insurance and patient portions has been very accurate. The staff makes the patient care experience very relaxed, light hearted, and they all seem to enjoy a good sense of humor. Best of all my young kids love this place and actually enjoy coming in for cleanings and regular care. Kids loving the dentist should tell you everything you need to know!

This is my place of employment. I'm writing a review because I want our patients to know that our kindness and caring nature doesn't just stop after our patients leave out the door every day. The staff is one in a million, and we all thrive to care and help one another and support each other in and out of the office. Dr. Sewell and Dr. Kennedy are fantastic people, and doctors, clinically and personally. If you're looking to find an amazing dentist, that is still kind, caring and considerate look no further. We would be honored to have you as our patient!
