Rapid City SD – The Gateway to the Black Hills
As the second-largest city in South Dakota, Rapid City is an important destination for both tourists and locals. It is the county seat of Pennington County, situated at the eastern edge of the Black Hills. The name “Rapid City” derives from Rapid Creek, which flows through the center of the city. The city is a popular tourist destination, particularly for those who wish to visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Crazy Horse Memorial in the nearby Black Hills.

Homelessness & Drug Addiction
The city is home to a large homeless population. According to the 2022 state census, Native Americans make up nearly 70% of the city’s homeless, with many living on the streets or in tents. Several local and state agencies have taken a more active role in helping people who are homeless. One new frontier is “co-response” efforts, where street outreach teams work with individuals who are homeless and connect them to social services and other resources when they are ready.

Public Safety
Rapid City police officers patrol the city’s downtown area and other key areas throughout the day. In addition, the Rapid City Fire Department provides emergency medical services to the community. The RCFD is a member of the South Dakota Statewide Association of EMS, and its ambulances are available to respond to any emergency in the city or the surrounding area.

Tourism and Business
Rapid City is a center for business in the state, with companies in the construction, manufacturing, finance, agriculture, retail, transportation and healthcare industries all present here. Its location at the intersection of Interstate 90 and Interstate 87 allows it to serve as a major stop for travelers in the region.

The region is known for its rich heritage and culture, as well as its scenic beauty, and it offers a wide variety of recreational activities to visitors. Whether it’s hiking, biking, skiing, golfing or shopping, there is something for everyone in the region.

Dinosaur Park, which sits high above the city and features statues of dinosaurs, is a must-see for visitors looking to take in the scenery. The park is also a good place to get a glimpse at the Badlands, a national monument that’s located in the neighboring Black Hills.

Guests can also enjoy the historic Hotel Alex Johnson, where nods to Native American culture are evident in the lobby and restaurant. There are a handful of other hotels in the area to choose from, including Comfort Inn and Best Western Rapid City.

Art Alley, a pedestrian walkway lined with sculptures of local artists, is another popular tourist attraction in Rapid City. The city is also home to Storybook Island, Chapel in the Hills, and Main Street Square, which is the city’s main shopping and entertainment district.

If you’re interested in the city’s cultural past, you’ll want to check out a number of museums. The Black Hills Institute of Geological Research has a museum that houses fossils and other prehistoric artifacts from the area.
