Rapid City is the second-largest city in South Dakota. Located east of the Black Hills National Forest, this vibrant city boasts an impressive collection of activities and attractions that appeal to people of all ages and interests. Whether you’re looking for a quick day trip to the Black Hills or you want to spend a few weeks in this Wild West wonderland, there is something for everyone in Rapid City.

Getting Around in Rapid City
The city is located along Interstate 90, and most of its population commutes by car. The downtown area is filled with museums, restaurants and stores. It also has a growing number of hotels and bed and breakfasts, making it an ideal choice for those who like to have access to the city’s many amenities without having to drive long distances.

Living in Rapid City
The cost of living in Rapid City is slightly higher than the national average. The main reason is that food prices in the city are higher than in other parts of the state. However, gas prices are fairly low, so residents will save on fuel expenses.

Expenses are also slightly higher in Rapid City because the city is relatively far from most places, so you’ll be spending more on transportation than you would in other areas of the state.

Things to do in Rapid City
Besides visiting Mount Rushmore, you can also explore the area’s prehistoric history at Dinosaur Park. This park overlooks the city and is a fun, family-friendly way to spend some time outdoors.

If you’re looking for a more active vacation, you can go hiking in the nearby Black Hills. This is an excellent option for those who enjoy outdoor sports, as the Black Hills offer plenty of trails, rock climbing, fishing, and more.

Another fun activity in the region is stargazing. If you’re a fan of the stars, you can book an evening at Badlands Sunset and Night Sky Adventures. The tour guides are trained in astronomy and will point out interesting points of interest along the way.

In the winter, you can also go ice skating in Main Street Square. This public event space transforms into a rink every winter, so you can skate with the whole family.

There are many other great winter activities to choose from in the Rapid City area, and you’ll be sure to find one for you and your family! You can also visit the Reptile Gardens zoo, where you’ll have the opportunity to see snakes up close.

Sculptures in Rapid City
In addition to its proximity to Mount Rushmore, Rapid City is also home to the city’s “City of Presidents.” These 43 bronze statues of former presidents line the streets of downtown and were designed by five local artists.

You can even go on a guided tour to learn more about the history behind the sculptures. If you’re looking for a more relaxing activity, there is a Meditation Trail that offers a beautiful view of the city. Next post.
