Known for its proximity to Mount Rushmore, Rapid City SD has plenty to offer visitors. From Wild West history to prehistoric wonders, you’ll find everything you need to make your stay in this Black Hills gem unforgettable.

Explore the Badlands
The Badlands, which are a part of the Black Hills and a national park, are breathtakingly beautiful. They feature rocky terrain and rolling grasslands, making them an ideal destination for outdoor adventures. You’ll find hiking trails and scenic drives to enjoy.

Visit the Crazy Horse Memorial
One of the most iconic attractions in the Black Hills, this 87-foot rock-face sculpture of a Lakota Sioux war chief, known as Crazy Horse, is a popular hike for locals and tourists alike. You’ll have to plan your trip carefully, however, as much work is still being done on the statue’s hand and forearm. See our homepage.

Take a tour of the Crazy Horse Museum
Located in downtown Rapid City, this museum is home to a variety of exhibits that showcase the area’s Native American heritage and culture. There are artifacts and displays from the 1800s to the present, as well as a wide variety of historical art.

See the world from above at Cosmos Mystery Area
If you’re looking for a bit of adventure while in Rapid City, then the Cosmos Mystery Area is an exciting option. This site is known for its many bizarre, physics-defying experiences. You’ll be able to walk up walls, roll balls across the ground and more!

Dinosaur Park
If dinosaurs are your thing, then head to this park. You’ll be able to admire life-size replicas of some of the largest creatures that ever lived. You can even climb on a dinosaur ride!

Ice Skating in Main Street Square
When the weather gets cold, ice skating is a great way to spend time with friends and family. During the winter, Rapid City’s newly constructed public event space, Main Street Square, transforms into an ice skating rink. Bring your own skates or rent a pair from the local skate shop to experience this fun winter activity with your friends and family!

Journey On
In 2019, a nonprofit organization called Journey On was established in Rapid City to address rising friction between predominantly Native American unsheltered individuals and local businesses. The group works to help displaced people integrate into society or remain safe, with a focus on creating better access to food and medical care.

Reducing the Urban Deer Herd
The Rapid City metropolitan area has a large urban deer herd, which can cause problems for residents. The City of Rapid City’s deer culling program helps to decrease the number of deer and provide meat to Feeding South Dakota.

Celebrate Turtle Soup
Every Friday, the Journey Museum and Learning Center features a special promotion that lets children enjoy a traditional soup and storytime. This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about the Black Hills’s history and culture without breaking the bank!

A Place for Meow
Rapid City has more than 77,000 residents, a large percentage of whom identify as Native American. While the community has historically had a strong sense of cultural identity, the recent growth of poverty, opioid abuse and unemployment have caused a rise in the numbers of homeless individuals. The City of Rapid City has taken steps to address this by developing a strategy called “street outreach,” which involves partnering with private groups that work with displaced individuals on a one-on-one basis. Something for everyone article.
