Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota, surrounded by the breathtaking Black Hills. If you’re interested in science, head to the Cosmos Mystery Area. This is a place where you can try out the laws of physics in a unique way, experiencing phenomena such as balls rolling uphill or people being able to walk up walls.
You can visit the nearby Reptile Gardens, where you can see a variety of reptiles from around the world. The park has a focus on interaction with the animals, so you can get up close to gentle giant tortoises and see Maniac, the biggest crocodile in the world.
The city is a hub for shopping, restaurants and cultural events. The Rapid City Chamber of Commerce hosts annual festivals, including the popular Taste of Rapid City and Fall Arts Festival.
Several events in the city celebrate the history of the Black Hills, including Turtle Soup at The Journey Museum and Learning Center, which offers stories of the area’s people and culture during a lunchtime delight of soup and storytime every Friday.
There’s also the annual Rapid City Powwow, held October 7-9, that highlights the Black Hills’ Native American heritage. During this event, local businesses host specials and sales to attract visitors.
Rapid City is the only city in the United States to receive a spot on the Great Plains Heritage Trail, which was created by the National Park Service to highlight the region’s rich cultural diversity and heritage.
